After Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jeremy Renner Has Only Two Movies Left on His Contract...And One is Hawkeye

In the last week or so, while promoting his new film Kill the Messenger, Avengers: Age of Ultron actor Jeremy Renner teased MTV that he might be starring in as many as seven Marvel Studios films, and admitted in that same interview that he's pretty okay with not having a headlining role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That "seven movies" thing, it turns out, was just a figure of speech. In a new interview with The Daily Beast, though, the actor got a little more specific: Renner told the site that he signed for The Avengers 1-3 and Hawkeye, "in case they wanted to do a Hawkeye spinoff," reports ScreenRant.

Of course, it wouldn't have been unheard-of; Cobie Smulders, who plays Maria Hill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, told the How I Met Your Mother podcast in 2012 that she had a clause in her contract that allowed for seven additional films after Marvel's The Avengers.

It also seems that Renner has been cautioned against any further talk of Captain America 3 just yet; his character was conspicuously absent from Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and he had suggested that might not be an issue next time around...but then walked his own remarks back, indicating they were just rumors.

It's been widely reported that while there has been talk of Hawkeye and Black Widow getting their own films, Marvel believes they are better-suited to supporting roles in Avengers and/or other characters' movies. Whether Captain America 3 could take the place of Hawkeye in the contract may be the bigger question than whether we'll see Renner as a solo superhero anytime soon.
