In Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther's debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, T'Challa only had revenge on his mind. When we see him again in his standalone film, the Wakandan King will have much more sophisticated objectives.

Following the huge casting announcements which came out of Marvel's Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic Con on Saturday, ComicBook.com had the chance to speak with Black Panther director Ryan Coogler to hear about the new Black Panther we'll see in his 2018 movie.

"With [Black Panther], we start with who T'Challa is," Coogler explains. "He's an African King, he inherited his throne, and that's the most important thing about him if you ask him. That's the biggest job that he has and how that effects his personal life and how that effects the country that he's in charge of, it kind of lends itself to its own story that is so different from anything that we've ever seen."

By the end of Civil War, Black Panther had evolved from a man seeking revenge to a man seeking justice. He showed mercy upon Zemo rather than killing him like Zemo did T'Challa's father earlier in the film. That same diplomacy which T'Chaka wished for T'Challa sounds like it will be present in the standalone film.

Black Panther hits theater February 16, 2018.
