Must-See Horror Titles Coming To Netflix In January

As December winds to a close and with January right around the corner, Netflix has officially released all of the titles that will be added to its streaming service for the upcoming month.

The service has announced many successful and well-known titles joining its library in January, like the Batman series, Peter Jackson's King Kong and the Lethal Weapon films. See the full list of movies arriving here.

There are some choice selections for horror fans that will be both arriving on the service in January and, sadly, some great titles that will no longer be available.

30 Days of Night - Available 1/1

Vampires have always been an inherently romantic monster, often using tactics of seduction to lure in their victims to drink their blood. This concept has grown increasingly popular over the last few years, especially due to the popularity of the Twilight series.

Based on the graphic novel of the same name, 30 Days of Night turns its vampires into far more monstrous creatures, descending on a small town in Alaska to quench their hunger. The creature's biggest weakness is sunlight, but being this far north allows the creatures to be on the offensive for an entire month, forcing the town's survivors to find ways to survive the ordeal.

Highly stylized and highly violent, 30 Days of Night reminds audiences why vampires shouldn't "sparkle."

The Exorcism of Emily Rose - Available 1/1

It's hard to create an exorcism film that can give The Exorcist a run for its money, which is why this film, being based on "true events," takes a different approach with its narrative than going full-blown horror.

Rather than depicting the torture a girl suffers under the guise of being "possessed," The Exorcism of Emily Rose takes the case of a woman who claimed to have been possessed and examines the events in a courtroom. While one side tries to confirm it was truly a supernatural occurrence, the other side tries to explain the other reasons the woman suffered the events, pitting science vs. religion in the case of a tragedy.

Despite it being more of a courtroom drama, the film does feature some terrifying sequences, as there are scenes interspersed which display the horrible things Emily Rose goes through. The concepts at the core of the film make it one of the more unconventional exorcism movies and one of the most surprising.

Before I Wake - Available 1/5

After having been shelved for almost four years, this Jacob Tremblay-starring thriller will finally debut on Netflix.

In the film, an adopted child's dreams begin to manifest themselves, making life for his new family both a dream come true and a living nightmare.

Possibly due to his partnership with Netflix earlier this year with Gerald's Game, this Mike Flanagan-directed movie is sure to be of interest to fans of the Stephen King collaborator. The director's Hush is also available on the streaming service.

The Conjuring - Available 1/8

The films in the Conjuring universe of horror movies have cumulatively grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, proving the effectiveness of the narrative.

As a family begins to experience strange happenings in their house, they contact paranormal researchers Ed and Lorraine Warren to help them determine what is stalking their family.

We may have a long wait before seeing another proper The Conjuring film, but with Annabelle: Creation being one of the year's biggest hits and the spinoff The Nun hitting theaters next summer, there's no better time to check out the film that started it all.

47 Meters Down - Available 1/10

With many parts of the country being in the throes of a frigid winter in the middle of January, 47 Meters Down is the perfect tropical escape.

During a vacation to Mexico, two women decide to go cage diving to get an up-close look at sharks. A mechanical malfunction plunges their cage to the bottom of the ocean, forcing them to decide between drowning when their air runs out or swimming to the surface with no protection between them and the massive fish.

The film features a simple premise but it delivers in all the ways you expect it to. The script and performances are satisfactory, with the biggest fear coming from our own confrontations of what we'd do in the characters' situations.
