X-Men: Apocalypse is "not the end of a trilogy," director/producer Bryan Singer says. It's actually much bigger than that, "the climax of six movies, including X-Men 1, 2, and 3."

He calls the film "an in-betweenquel" in an interview with Fandango. "It harks upon all of those movies, and because it's ultimately about the formation of the X-Men, it's the beginning of endless possibilities with these characters."

That means the franchise could go anywhere from here, including into "outer space," and beyond. He says that's because "The X-Men universe is enormously expansive - it's every bit as large as the remaining Marvel universe or DC universe."

That's why he's looking forward to Fox's expansion of the franchise into TV, and with films that focus on solo characters or teams that aren't called the "X-Men."

X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters May 27, 2016. Read our full review here.
