The dark, edgy thriller that Riverdale has become -- a teenage Twin Peaks, of sorts -- was nearly nothing like we have today.

It was almost a campy comedy. It was almost a movie. It almost starred, of all people, Louis C.K.

Riverdale Executive Producer Sarah Schechter, who was also in talks for the movie, told Entertainment Weekly that the whole project, initially, was something altogether different.

"It just got crazy," Schechter said. "There were, like, time portals. At one point one of my bosses said, 'What about Louis C.K. for Archie?' I called Roberto and said, 'Don't close the deal. Run away.' Soon after I left [to run Berlanti Productions], one of the first calls was to Roberto to say, 'Why don't we do this as a TV show?' "

Perhaps Louis C.K. would have been an ideal fit for the goody-two-shoes gang, and maybe had been more true to the 75 years of comic canon, it would have clearly been a different product than the soon-to-premiere second season of the hit CW show.

In a separate interview, also with EW, executive producer Greg Berlanti said the show will waste no time going deeper into its dark tone.

"The first three episodes of this are the strongest of a second season I've ever been a part of," he said. "It's got an incredible new mystery and a new hook, and I think it's got more of everything that people love about the show."

"For every really sweet thing, Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa] has something really spicy," Berlanti continued. "For every nostalgic thing, he's got something so contemporary and adult and scary."

Fans have already been anticipating that Riverdale would continue digging into that adult and scary territory.

The first season finale ended with Archie's dad, Fred, being shot by a masked gunman and star Camila Mendes (Veronica Lodge) recently revealed that the show goes fully into the thriller genre. The latest promo for the upcoming second season goes even deeper into the darkness, with clips of Fred Andrews in serious condition in the hospital and Archie on his knees with a gun to his head as well as a brief look at Veronica's intense-looking dad.

How dark will Riverdale go? Fortunately, fans don't have to wait much longer to find out. Riverdale returns for its second season on Wednesday, October 11th on The CW.
