Jake is transported to Mid-World, where he encounters the cowboy knight Roland. Roland is on a quest to find the Dark Tower located in End-World, the nexus of time and space, in order to save Mid-World from destruction, but he and Jake are dogged by the Man in Black, a sorcerer named Walter Padick (Matthew McConaughey), and many monsters that seek to halt their journey.

The Dark Tower movie is inspired by The Dark Tower novels by Stephen King. The film acts as a sequel of sorts to the final book in the series, The Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower.

It has been a long road to the screen for The Dark Tower, spanning a decade. The film was originally placed in the care of J.J. Abrams, but the film took so long to get off the ground that the option expired in 2009. In 2010, The Dark Tower began development again, and this time Ron Howard became attached to it. in 2015, Sony decided to fast-track the project. Howard went from director to producer, leaving a job opening that Nikolaj Arcel would fill.

The Dark Tower finally began production in April 2016 with filming in South Africa. The Dark Tower was originally scheduled for a first quarter 2017 release, but eventually, Sony decided to push the film back into the summer months.

Although there was an extensive cover feature in Entertainment Weekly about the picture, fans are still awaiting a trailer. The Dark Tower trailer was rumored to hit around Christmastime of 2016, but no trailer appeared, leading some fans to worry about the state of the film's production. The release of this poster seems to reconfirm Sony's commitment to the project.

The Dark Tower movie is written and directed by Nikolaj Arcel. In addition to Elba, McConaughey, and Taylor, the film's cast also includes Kathryn Winnick, Jackie Earle Haley, Fran Kranz, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Michael Barbieri, Claudia Kim, José Zúñiga, Alex McGregor, Nicholas Hamilton, and De-Wet Nagel.

The Dark Tower opens in theaters on July 28, 2017.
