Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn I & II To Get a Reprint

09/19/2016 09:43 pm EDT

Following in the heels of the Superman: The Man of Steel, Nightwing, Robin, and Superman: The Man of Tomorrow trade paperback programs, it appears as though DC Comics will begin to reissue the post-Crisis on Infinite Earth tales of Green Lantern in a series of volumes titled Green Lantern: Hal Jordan.

The first volume will be in October's Previews magazine, and has a projected release date of January 4, 2017. The title ties nicely into Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps, Robert Venditti's current ongoing comic book series featuring the character.

The first Emerald Dawn miniseries, a post-Crisis reinvention of Hal Jordan's origin as Green Lantern, introduced the character as a troubled young man who has a drunk driving accident, causing the paralysis of a friend. The second miniseries, Emerald Dawn II, saw Hal undergoing his Green Lantern training while simultaneously serving 90 days in jail.

Both Emerald Dawn series have been collected in individual issues in the past, but this is the first time the two of them -- featuring writing by James Owsley (later known as Christopher Priest), Keith Giffen, and Gerard Jones -- will be collected in the same book. The title -- Green Lantern: Hal Jordan Vol. 1 -- also suggests that there will be more volumes, likely collecting Jones's run on the ongoing Green Lantern title, which he wrote for almost 50 issues before Hal was written out in favor of Kyle Rayner in a series written by Ron Marz.

Jones's Green Lantern run saw Jordan squabbling for dominance with Guy Gardner, and rebuild the Green Lantern Corps from scratch after it was decimated by the destruction of the Central Power Battery and the retreat of the Guardians of the Universe. Hal and other Green Lanterns had been appearing in Action Comics Weekly and Justice League International for a while before the reboot happened, but many of them didn't have rings. Jones would also introduce a number of new Green Lanterns for his series, including Boodikka, Brik, Aa, Amanita, and Kreon. Many of the characters would be killed in Emerald Twilight, Marz's first story, but a number of them would return, either in Beau Smith's Guy Gardner: Warrior or in Geoff Johns's Green Lantern run in the mid-2000s.
