Rogue One Closes Theatrical Run Over $1 Billion

For all intents and purposes, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was a resounding success. Lucasfilm's foray into spinoff territory was a gamble that has paid dividends for the company, and now that it has finally closed in theaters with an impressive figure the home video sales and syndications will continue adding onto their ginormous pile of money.

After closing on May 4, Gareth Edwards tale of heisting rebels took in over a billion dollars worldwide at the box office nearly five months after it first released in theaters.

According to BoxOfficeMojo.com, the film closed at $1.055 billion with a production budget of $200 million. That's an immense profit even when marketing and distribution costs are factored into the total.

All of these figures basically translate into one basic truth: expect a ton more Star Wars spinoffs in the coming years as Disney continues to reap the benefits of their $4 billion investment.

Though Star Wars: The Force Awakens closed in theaters with a tidy run of $2.068 billion, it had the benefit of ten years of hype after the last Saga film premiered in theaters as well as being a main entry in the Star Wars franchise. That film crossed the billion mark in less than four months in the domestic market alone.

But it's an impressive bow for Lucasfilm's first attempt to create a new avenue of exploring their fantasy/sci-fi universe outside of the Skywalker family's perspective.

We shouldn't expect to see a Rogue Two despite the movie's success because *SPOILER ALERT* everyone is dead, but maybe now Disney will be willing to try more experimental spinoff films on less established characters. While we're excited to see the Han Solo movie and hope to get both Darth Vader AND Obi-Wan Kenobi anthology films, it would be cool to see some aspects that have seen less focus in the films get fleshed out.

Maybe a movie focusing on the underground, high stakes world of podracing? We're just throwing that out there…

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is available now on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD.

A band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans in 'Star Wars' anthology film, Rogue One.

Directed by Gareth Edwards, it's the first of the new standalone features from Lucasfilm and Disney, which take place outside the core "Skywalker Saga" of films noted by an Episode number. Rogue One tells the story of the small band of rebels that were tasked with stealing the plans to the first Death Star.
