New Look At The First Order's "Crab" Walkers From The Force Awakens

Lucasfilm's seventh movie in the Star Wars saga refreshed a lot of different characters, concepts, and vehicles for a brand new generation.

Passing the figurative baton from Luke, Leia, and Han, new characters Rey, Finn, and Poe were given the spotlight in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and stole their scenes much like the beloved characters from the original trilogy.

But the villainous First Order also provided a unique take on the forces of the Dark Side, with Kylo Ren leading a charge of Stormtroopers very much like their Imperial counterparts. The movie also provided a few updated designs of classic vehicles including the shuttles, TIE Fighters, and speeders we're used to seeing.

One vehicle that was only glimpsed at has finally been given a full reveal courtesy of the reference book Star Wars - On The Front Lines. The German book provides one of the best images of the AT-PD, a new version of the AT-AT with long protruding legs like a crab.

The vehicles were only briefly seen on Starkiller Base in The Force Awakens—once when General Hux delivered his speech before initiating the destruction of the Republic, and again when Han, Chewbacca, and Finn arrive on the super weapon.

The AT-PD was barely featured in the new movie, and there were rumors that many scenes in the snow of Starkiller Base were actually cut. No merchandise of the new vehicle design was ever sold, so it kind of seems like a waste.

Hopefully this means we'll see the vehicle more prominently. It would be welcome in a lot of places, whether that's in a future Star Wars movie, cartoon, or video game. We'll take any excuse for more Star Wars vehicles.

It likely will not feature in The Last Jedi, which already has its own new "Gorilla" Assault Walker debuting in a battle on Crait against the Resistance forces.
