Star Wars: The Force Awakens Director J.J. Abrams Releases Statement On Carrie Fisher

Carrie Fisher became a pop culture icon through her role as Princess Leia Organa in the original Star Wars Trilogy. As early as A New Hope, Fisher's Leia proved to be an unconventional princess, letting her "heroes' know what she really thought and picking up a blaster to do the job better herself.

Fisher reprised the role 30 years later for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with Leia having dropped the princess title and become a seasoned general in the Resistance.

Carrie Fisher Dies At 60

Following Fisher's death earlier today, Star Wars: The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams has issued a comment on Fisher's passing, released through one of Abrams' signature handwritten Tweets on the Twitter account of his production company, Bad Robot.

"You didn't need to meet Carrie Fisher to understand her power," Abrams wrote. "She was just as brilliant, beautiful, tough and wonderful, incisive and funny as you could imagine. What an unfair thing to lose her. How lucky to have been blessed with her at all."

Fisher suffered a heart attack while on a flight from London to Los Angeles. Another flight passenger administered CPR to Fisher. Once the plane landed, Fisher was immediately rushed to a hospital.

Upon arriving at the hospital, Fisher's condition was said to be "not good." Fisher's brother has released periodic updates on his sister's status. Fisher was reportedly stable for a time, then moved to the hospital's intensive care unit. She finally passed away this morning.

It has been reported that Fisher completed filming her role as Leia in Star Wars: Episode VIII prior to her death. Star Wars: Episode VIII will release in theaters in December 2017.
