If you thought Rogue One made its mark on 2016 - which it totally did - remember that it wasn't the only one. While Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens was released in December 2015, it still managed to crack the top ten domestic films this year.

When you stop to think about it, that's incredibly impressive.

The Force Awakens was released on December 18, 2015 - a little over two weeks before 2016. Most movies pull in their biggest numbers over their first two or three weeks in theaters, and the newest chapter in the Star Wars Saga was no exception. Around 70% of its $936.7 million domestic haul came before the new year, but the film still had plenty of legs heading into 2016.

The remaining 30% of the movie's earnings - or around $284.7 million - came from tickets sold in January and February of 2016. That figure puts The Force Awakens at the number 10 spot for all of the year's releases - even though that was only a fraction of its overall haul.

To put it in perspective, let's compare The Force Awakens to another Disney success in 2016 - Doctor Strange. The Marvel film took home an impressive amount in the domestic box office, earning $230 million over its entire run. For the couple of months Doctor Strange was in theaters - including its opening weekend - it still managed to fall $50 million short of The Force Awakens' 2016 haul.

The inclusion of The Force Awakens gives Disney six of the top ten domestic films this year. Finding Dory, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Captain America: Civil War gave the studio the top three spots, while Zootopia and The Jungle Book also placed in the top ten.
