Tom Hiddleston was not in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and according to early interviews, was never going to be in it. But then he was on set, and that news got out. And then, he wasn't in the movie. So what the heck happened, and was Loki, far and away the favorite villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ever supposed to play a role in the film?

"I was part of the dream sequence for Thor in the film. I shot for a day and enjoyed it very much," Hiddleston explained to Digital Spy. "But in test screenings, audiences had over-emphasized Loki's role; they thought that Loki was controlling Ultron. It was imbalancing audience's expectations."

And that's why Kevin and Joss cut the cameo from the film, to not confuse audiences quite so much. Loki's future is currently uncertain, if you take Hiddleston's slightly cheeky word for it. However, the next Thor film, titled Thor: Ragnarok, almost certainly will feature the character heavily. After all, last we saw Asgard, Loki had replaced Odin (in disguise, of course), and the titular Ragnarok, the Norse end-of-days, is started by Loki in the myth (and the multiple Marvel Comics adaptations of the event).

Avengers: Age of Ultron is available now on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD. Hiddleston next appears on screen in Crimson Peak, a gothic horror film by Guillermo del Toro, in theaters Octobetr 16, 2015
