The X-Files

Warning: Spoilers ahead for tonight's premiere of The X-Files.

While we knew he was coming, there was one character who didn't make an appearance in tonight's season premiere of The X-Files until the show's closing moment.

He wasn't even listed in the opening credits, with his name instead held back until the end, once he'd appeared onscreen...looking a little worse for the last decade-plus of wear.

That would be WIlliam B. Davis as the Cigarette Smoking Man, Fox Mulder's possible father and one of the chief architects of nearly every conspiracy the series has ever dealt with.

Davis played the role for ten seasons on TV, in one of the two feature films, and in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (for a cameo). Tonight, though, we got to see a very different look to the iconic villain:

Cigarette-Smoking-Man

Smoking through a hole in his neck, the series' most iconic antagonist from years past proved that he really hasn't changed at all -- still fussing away in his solitary lair, fretting about keeping a lifetime of secrets and puffing away on his Morleys.

While he didn't show up until the final moments, it's likely we'll see plenty more of the Cigarette Smoking Man tomorrow when The X-Files heads to its regular day and time, Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
