While the dropping ratings became a scary theme throughout the seventh season of The Walking Dead, they weren't enough to stop the dominance of the series over its competition.
According to AdWeek, The Walking Dead was the single most-wathed TV show among the coveted 18-49 age group. The show averaged 11.3 million viewers in the age group, which led the second-place program by a large margin. Sunday Night Football came in next, with just 8.7 million.
Not only did The Walking Dead win the overall viewership of the year, but the season seven premiere was the highest viewed block of scripted television in the 18-49 category.
Super Bowl 50 was the highest-viewed program for the demographic, and that came as no surprise. The biggest event in sports drew 48.1 million viewers in the age range. After the Super Bowl, Game 7 of the World Series (16.2 million), Game 7 of the NBA Finals (14.4 million), and the Oscar's ceremony (13.8 million) all finished ahead of The Walking Dead.
The AMC zombie series however, is the only scripted series on that list. The top four programs were all events that only occurred one time in the year - and they are all live television. The Walking Dead grabbed 13.6 million viewers in the demographic - just .2 million less than The Oscar's.
The Walking Dead has been a dominant force on cable television for years now, and this info just goes to show how strong the series truly is. As we head into the second half of the season, look for the series to have a strong start to 2017.
