David Hasselhoff Was Promised He Would Be Nick Fury Forever

David Hasselhoff and Samuel L. Jackson

Back before The Avengers came out, Comicbook.com joked that David Hasselhoff might discover a clause in his old Nick Fury TV movie contract that restricted anyone else from ever being cast in the role. We kidded that The Avengers might have to be re-shot to include David Hasselhoff instead of Samuel L. Jackson.

As always, truth sometimes turns out to be stranger than fiction. It seems our joke was much closer to reality than we ever thought, as David Hasselhoff has gone on record saying that he was promised the Nick Fury role forever. While doing promotion for Piranha 3DD, David Hasselhoff talked to Movieline about his time as Nick Fury.

While Hasselhoff had yet to see The Avengers, he claimed his Nick Fury was the organic Nick Fury that was written and discussed with Stan Lee. Hasselhoff said that Stan Lee called him the “ultimate Nick Fury.” Hasselhoff described Nick Fury as someone who “was written to be tongue-in-cheek, and he had a cigar in his mouth, he was a tough guy — he was cool.”

What’s more, Hasselhoff also added, “Avi Arad, when they bought it, said, ‘Don’t worry, you’re going to be the Nick Fury forever,’ and they lied. [Pause] But that happens to me all the time. That’s when you realize life isn’t fair.”

So does this mean that David Hasselhoff could wind up replacing Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury in Avengers 2? Not likely, but Hasselhoff does seem to be angling for a role, as he said that he would be there if it ever turned out that Nick Fury had a brother named Dick Fury. Wonder what Samuel L. Jackson would think about having the Hoff as a brother? In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Samuel L. Jackson joked about how he prepared for his role by watching Hasselhoff and deciding not to do any of what he had done.
