Man of Steel Writer: More Action Than The Dark Knight Trilogy

During an interview with Empire Magazine released earlier this week, The Dark Knight Trilogy co-writer and Man of Steel screenwriter David S. Goyer was pressed with that all-important question: Will Superman finally hit something? His answer, a resounding yes. "There is more action in Man of Steel than any of the Dark Knight films," Goyer said of the Zack Snyder-directed reboot, which is set to hit American theaters in June. That will please a lot of fans who have been hoping for a big, sci-fi/action-oriented Superman film for years. 2005's unsuccessful Superman Returns was notably low on action, and the question "Why doesn't he HIT SOMETHING?" became so common among fans that it's a kind of online joke. Of course, Superman's big action films have had mixed success; while Superman II is widely enjoyed by fans, excepting a few silly and dated bits here and there (and that movie sees him facing off against General Zod and Phantom Zone criminals, as he'll do in Man of Steel), Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, in which Superman fights a villain who is a kind of strange mix of Bizarro and Captain Atom, is widely regarded as one of the worst comic book films ever made. The other three films (Superman: The Movie, Superman III and Superman Returns) all centered around decidedly more white collar crime. While Superman: The Movie gets away with it because so much of the film was dedicated to establishing Superman's character and dazzling moviegoers with state-of-the-art special effects, the sequels have always been criticized as being a bit dull, silly and not presenting Superman with anything that could believably challenge him. It looks like Goyer and Snyder are determined to bring that streak to an end.
