JJ Abrams Star Wars Disney Announcement

With the original Star Wars cast all but confirmed to return by the actors themselves and George Lucas, everyone has been waiting for Disney to make some type of official announcement about the direction of Star Wars Episode 7. Now, director J.J. Abrams has finally broken his silence, even though he doesn't offer a lot of details. When asked about the plan for Star Wars Episode 7 by Empire Online, J.J. Abrams said, "I don't know because we're just getting started. So it's a great question that I hope I'll have a good answer to when I know what the answer is." J.J. Abrams also compared his approach to the new Star Wars movies to his approach to the Star Trek movies. While J.J. Abrams is known to be a huge Star Wars fan, he professes, "I was never a Star Trek fan." However, he says with Star Trek that he knew there was a version of it that would make him feel excited. J.J. Abrams said, "How we were going to get there, what the choices were going to be, who was going to be in it – all of those things I knew would have to be figured out, but it was all based on a foundation of this indescribable, guttural passion for something that could be. It's a similar feeling that I have with Star Wars. I feel like I can identify a hunger for what I would want to see again and that is an incredibly exciting place to begin a project. The movies, the worlds could not be more different but that feeling that there's something amazing here is the thing that they share." While J.J. Abrams initially denied he was going to direct Star Wars Episode 7 because of his involvement with Star Trek, he eventually reversed course. In explaining why he changed his mind, J.J. Abrams said, "My knee-jerk reaction was that I'm in the middle of working on the Star Trek movie and I can't even consider it. But then time went by and I got further along working on the movie and getting to a place where I had done most of the heavy lifting. So when I met with Kathy Kennedy we just started discussing it and I was able to actually engage in the conversation." And while the press was in the dark about J.J. Abrams negotiations about Star Wars Episode 7, there was another famous director who was well aware of what was going on. J.J. Abrams revealed that Steven Spielberg knew all about it and was very encouraging to him throughout the process.
