Kraven the Hunter

Earlier, we posted our exclusive interview with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 director Marc Webb. In it, he discusses the new film, the future of the The Amazing Spider-Man film universe, and how The Amazing Spider-Man 2 overlaps with other films in the series. Fans know that a Sinister Six film is in the works. We didn't expect Webb to name the Six for us - and some reports suggest that the Six haven't even been chosen - but we wanted to get a feel for who he might like to see. So, we asked Webb what Spider-Man villain that hadn't already appeared in one of his films he was most interested in. While Webb listed several villains that he had some interest in, there was one that really stood out. "Kraven," Webb replied. "Kraven. I like the idea of Kraven. The Vulture. Ock. I always thought the idea of Mysterio was interesting. Maybe Scorpion. But really, Kraven I think is kind of interesting." For those who don't know, Kraven the Hunter is a classic Spider-Man villain, created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and a founding member of the Sinister Six. A descendant of Russian nobility, Kraven's family was forced to emigrate to the United States in 1917, following the February Revolution. Kraven became an obsessive big game hunter and, after mastering the sport, decided to hunt Spider-Man to prove that he was the world's greatest hunter. Kraven's quintessential story is "Kraven's Last Hunt," by J. M. DeMatteis, Mike Zeck, and Bob McLeod. In the story, Kraven is facing his own mortality and decides to make one last effort at defeating Spider-Man, who he sees as a worthy foe, before accepting his fate. The story revealed much of Kraven's back-story and added layers of depth to what was previously a pretty gimmicky villain. Kraven hasn't appeared on the big screen as of yet, but he does play a role The Amazing Spider-Man 2 video game. Previews of the game seem to show him as a mentor to Spider-Man, though tie-in games are usually not considered canon for their films. Webb is signed on to direct The Amazing Spider-Man 3, likely his last Spider-Man movie, but it will be Drew Goddard who helms Sinister Six. If Webb does want to use Kraven on screen, he'll likely play a role in The Amazing Spider-Man 3. As a founding member of the Sinister Six, it wouldn't be hard to imagine the character making the transition to that film as well.
