Hayao Miyazaki To Receive Honorary Oscar

The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts will honor legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki with an honorary Oscar at the Academy's 6th Annual Governors Awards on Saturday, November 8.

Miyazaki, the co-founder of Studio Ghibli, has worked for decades to create some of the most beloved, imaginative, and iconic anime films of all time, including My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, The Wind Rises, and Spirited Away, which was the first anime film to win an American Academy Award.

Other talents to be honored at this year's Governors Awards include Harry Belafonte, Jean-Claude Carrière, and Maureen O'Hara.

"The Governors Awards allow us to reflect upon not the year in film, but the achievements of a lifetime," said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs.  "We're absolutely thrilled to honor these outstanding members of our global filmmaking community and look forward to celebrating with them in November."
