Tom Holland, Ruth Negga Among Bafta Rising Star Award Nominees

Two comic book adaptation stars are among the nominees for the Bafta EE Rising Star Award, which will be voted on by the public ahead of the 2017 Bafta Awards, held on Feburary 12, 2017. Tom Holland, who stars as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the new Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures joint productions, and Ruth Negga, who stars as Tulip O'Hare on Preacher (and previously appeared on Agents of SHIELD as a recurring character) are both among the nominees.

Genre is well-represented as Anya Taylor-Joy was also nominated (star of Witch and Morgan), with Lucas Hedges and Spanish actress Laia Costa rounding out the list.

Tom Holland made his debut as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War in 2016, representing the first time the character appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, thanks to a landmark rights-sharing deal between rival studios Marvel and Sony. He reprises the role in July 2017's Spider-Man: HomecomingHe currently has two other films scheduled for 2017, as he's currently filming The Current War and Pilgrimage is in post-production, and he continues to balance a mixture of period pieces, dramas, and his new superhero career.

Ruth Negga, meanwhile, has the hit AMC series Preacher going into a second season, and also appeared in Loving in theaters in 2016. The actress has worked steadily since 2004, but is on the verge of a breakout point in her career as she continues to explore multiple angles.

2016's Rising Star Award went ot John Boyega, one of the stars of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, who beat out Taron Egerton (Kingsman), Dakota Johnson, Brie Larson (soon joining the MCU as Captain Marvel), and Bel Powley.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is in post-production for a July 7, 2017 release. Preacher returns to AMC in 2017.

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.
