During a visit to Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Walking Dead star Jeffrey Dean Morgan explained Negan's villainous ways: the bat-wielding baddie is cranky from night shoots.

"I was working last night, like late, and then jumped on a plane and kind of just rolled in to see you," Morgan joked.

Morgan, who came aboard the show in the season 6 finale, said the worst part of The Walking Dead is the late hours:

"I hate it — there's nothing worse," Morgan answered when asked if he likes shooting at night. "When I was twenty — when you're in your twenties, you're like, there's something romantic about shooting at night. Now, f—k that! It's just brutal. One day we're on the show, we start work at like 4:30 in the morning, we gotta get in there to get bloody and all that kind of stuff, and like the next day, 'Come in tomorrow night at 6:30 pm.' And so there's no turnaround. So we're always a disaster."

"I would think it would affect your acting, doesn't it?" Kimmel asked.

"Yeah, I'm horrible," Morgan quipped. "That's why Negan is bad. It's night shoots! Otherwise Negan would be a dream."

Expect Negan to get even grumpier, Walking Dead fans: Morgan and wife Hilarie Burton are expecting their second child, a baby girl. We'll hope, for Morgan's sake, the actor gets all the rest he needs to keep terrorizing Rick Grimes and co. in season 8 of The Walking Dead, which will "reveal" more of Negan in the weeks ahead.

The show will tackle Negan's origin sometime in the future, but Negan's newest team member — Alexandrian-turned-Savior Eugene (Josh McDermitt) — will help bring out some of Negan's back story as early as this season.

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC.
