Lakeshore Entertainment have optioned The Sword, the critically-acclaimed Image Comics series by Jonathan and Joshua Luna, as a film property. The story, which revolves around a college student whose life is turned upside down when some very bad people force their way into it in search of a unique sword, is considered as having franchise potential, with Lakeshore looking for a female-led action franchise to take the place of its stagnant Underworld property, reports Deadline. They've also got the Hollywood pitch for the film: "A young paraplegic leads an ordinary existence until her family is brutally murdered by a mysterious trio. Escaping from the assassins, she discovers a sword that restores her ability to walk and grants her physical powers. With her new weapon she sets out on a journey of brutal retribution." Production on the first film is expected to begin this year. The first issue of the series was one of the comics made available free from Image Comics last year on ComiXology, and can still be accessed free here.
