Wonder Woman 2017: What Do We Know?

In 2017, more than 75 years after her initial creation, DC Entertainment will bring Wonder Woman to the big screen in her own headlining feature film for the first time.

Played by Gal Gadot, the character will appear first in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016 and then in Justice League Part One later in 2017, after Wonder Woman has come and gone, according to the sequence laid out by Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara (this may not be the final release order). The odds are good that the movie will be in theaters June 23, 2017.

Little is known about Wonder Woman's origins in the film, except that she is indeed the daughter of Zeus as she is in the New 52 iteration of the comics -- the currently-prevailing continuity.

It's hard not to wonder whether Wonder Woman will get much of an origin story at all, or whether the film will primarily be a thread between Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

In any case, it's not clear who will write or direct Wonder Woman. There have been a number of creative staffs on both TV and in the movies who have tried and failed to find a pitch that worked for Warner Bros., so the fact that she's in active development and has a release date is in itself a big step in the right direction.

We also know that the movie will come with a lot of pressure; it will not only be the first female-led superhero tentpole of its generation and the first one ever on this scale. Wonder Woman the cultural icon has overshadowed Wonder Woman the character in the recent past and the movie will have to be good for that to reverse course -- if it even can.
