Guardians of the Galaxy composer Tyler Bates is returning to score the sequel, according to Collider.

Bates' original score was largely overshadowed by Guardians of the Galaxy's billboard-topping "Mixtape" soundtrack made up of catchy 1960s and 1970s songs. Don't overlook Bate's musical contributions to the film, though. Gunn used an unorthodox approach, having Bates produce portions of his score ahead of time so that Gunn could film to the music. With that in mind, Bates may want to get started on the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. score sooner rather than later as filming is scheduled to commence in February.

This will be Bates fourth collaboration with Gunn as they previously worked together on Slither and Super. Outside of that, Bates is also well known for collaborating with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder, scoring scored 300, Dawn of the Dead and Sucker Punch

James Gunn (Slither, Super), who directed 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, will return to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
