Jack Larson, who played Jimmy Olsen on The Adventures of Superman, has passed away, Deadline reports. He was 87.

Larson got his start in the 1948 movie "Fighter Squadron," but his onscreen career was defined almost entirely by his time as Jimmy Olsen. He played the role from 1952 until 1958, and would periodically return for cameos in other Superman-related media, from Superboy to Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman to Superman Returns.

In Lois & Clark, he played "Old Jimmy Olsen" in the episode "Brutal Youth." According to IMDb, he was set to play "Uncle Jimmy" in a film called Surge of Power: Revenge of the Sequel, which has been in production since 2014.

Born in 1928, Larson caught the eye of producers with film work as a young man, starting with 1948's Fighter Squadron. Besides a life-long association with the Man of Steel, Larson's career after Jimmy primarily focused on writing and producing. He's credited with writing such plays as The Candied House(1966), Chuck (1968) and The Astronaut's Tale (1998).

Larson was presented with Comic-Con's Inkpot Award in 2013, when he appeared with a slate of Superman luminaries at the Superman 75th anniversary panel. You can see it below.

During that panel, Larson revealed that in the 1950s, he had actually taken Jimmy Olsen's bow tie home after the series finished filming. Years later, he would donate it to the Smithsonian, who had asked Warner Bros. for it under the mistaken impression that it was in storage with the remaining Adventures of Superman props.

"If you're like me and you grew up in a certain era, the best part of coming home from school certain days is that The Adventures of Superman was on once you got home," said Comic-Con's Director of Print Publications Gary Sassaman. "A lot of us grew up watching that show, loving that show. There were only about 103 or 104 episodes, so we knew them by heart but every day we came home and watched."
