The opening weekend for Captain America: Civil War was good enough for the fifth best all-time in North America, but was slightly less than Disney's weekend projections. After a Sunday that saw more family-oriented film going than expected, likely due to it also being Mother's Day, the totals for Civil War dipped slightly from $181.8 million estimates to $178 million actuals.

That's still, again, enough for a fifth place all-time finish, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World, The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and above Iron Man 3. Being about $13 million under the second Avengers film has to be a slight disappointment for Marvel Studios and Disney, but being directly between the solo film and team film numbers as an opening was pretty close to best case scenario.

The question now, of course, is that of the legs that Civil War has. The movie has great reviews and great word-of-mouth, two things that should give it some staying power, but the 2.5 hour runtime is a little long for typical popcorn fare. Angry Birds will hit in two weeks, but X-Men: Apocalypse and Disney's own Alice Through the Looking Glass in three weeks will be the real test. In the meantime, Disney also had the #2 movie this weekend with The Jungle Book, starting their sure-to-be-powerhouse summer strong.

Captain America: Civil War is in theaters now.
