DC Comics Announces Midnighter And Apollo

DC Comics has announced Midnighter & Apollo. The announcement is neatly timed with the last day of Gay Pride Month, as the six-issue miniseries will reunite one of the premiere gay couples in superhero comics. The series' creative team is writer Steve Orlando, who wrote Midnighter's recent solo series, and artist Fernando Blanco and the series will feature covers by ACO. Orlando's Midnighter saw the brutal vigilante striking out on his own after breaking up with Apollo, but things have changed.

"They have a firmer idea of who they are, and they've become stronger and more confident together," Steve Orlando told the New York Times.

Midnighter and Apollo were created in 1998 as gay versions of the Batman and Superman archetypes, respectively, for the Wildstorm Universe. They were both members of the Authority, Wildstorm's top tier superhero team, and adopted a child together. When the events of Flashpoint folded the Wildstorm Universe into the DC Comics New 52 universe, both characters had their history rewritten.

Orlando's Midnighter portrayed the character in a modern light, teaming him up with Dick Grayson and giving lots of a narrative space his dating life. The series was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award this year.

"Getting to write a character that helped me when I was younger and boost the signal to a new generation has been an honor," he wrote on his blog. Of the new project, he said, "This is the World's Finest Couple — kicking back and making each other better than they are on their own."

Midnighter & Apollo #1 will go on sale this fall.
