ABC and Lucasfilm Have Had Conversations About Star Wars TV Series

Disney-owned ABC and sister company Lucasfilm have had conversations about a Star Wars TV series to develop for the network, said ABC boss Channing Dungey at the network's TCA 2016 presentation. That doesn't mean fans should get too excited just yet - it's just conversations, not anything to actually move forward on yet.

"As a fan, I would absolutely love to say yes [to a Star Wars show]. We have had conversations, and will continue to have conversations with Lucasfilm. It would be wonderful if we could find a way to extend that brand onto our programming," Dungey said at the presentation according to reports.

That quote isn't going to win any "not the most obvious thing ever said" awards - obviously ABC would be up for a Star Wars live-action TV show, especially after The Force Awakens set all sorts of records last year. A live-action show was in development a few years back, before George Lucas sold the company to Disney. Assets were designed for it, with entire sets, characters, and even reportedly more than a full season of scripts. The show was going to take place in the underworld of the Star Wars universe, and the sets designed were later used for the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars as well as video games.

A new series for ABC would likely be developed from scratch, though, and tie in more directly to their existing films. Currently, Lucasfilm has Star Wars Rebels, an animated series on Disney XD that takes place a few years before the original trilogy of films.
