Daisy Ridley Says Star Wars: Episode VIII Title Reveal Is Far, Far Away

With Star Wars: Episode VIII in post-production, fans had hoped they might learn the film's official title at this year's Star Wars Celebration Europe or even San Diego Comic Comic. However, those hopes were dashed as Lucasfilm remained tight-lipped about the upcoming film. But, as Star Wars fans are a tenacious bunch, many are still hoping they'll learn Episode VIII's title any day now. But, according to Daisy Ridley, those fans will need to wait a bit longer.

The actress recently appeared on the UK-based podcast My Dad Wrote a Porno and talked about her work on Episode VIII. When Ridley was asked whether the film's title would be released soon, she had this to say:

"I heard a title, but I don't know if it's going to be that. I really don't know much about anything. I heard the title a long time ago before we started filming, and so I feel some things have slightly tweaked during production. It's going to be a while before it's released I imagine."

Obviously, the answer isn't one many die-hard fans were hoping to hear, but the response isn't all that surprising

"Historically, this makes sense," said ComicBook.com's Star Wars expert Lucas Siegel, "as The Force Awakens wasn't revealed as the title of Episode VII until the first week of November 2014, about 13 months before its release. A similar time frame on this one - maybe even closer to Thanksgiving (instead of competing with fellow Disney property Doctor Strange for headlines) would help put Star Wars back in every fan's mind right before Rogue One hits theaters, and keep the conversation focused on the galaxy far, far away."

Should Episode VIII reveal its title closer to Thanksgiving, history would be certainly be repeating itself. After all, the first teaser trailer for Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens dropped shortly after the holiday, sending fans everywhere into a bonafide frenzy. A timely announcement by Episode VIII would bring additional hype to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ahead of its December 16 release without overshadowing the spin-off entirely. Hopefully, a teaser trailer will also go live with Episode VIII's revelation, and Rian Johnson has confirmed he'll be attending Star Wars Celebration Orlando next spring to show off the film there at the very least.

And, what's more, it'll be interesting to see whether the title Daisy knows winds up being the official one. After all, fans did learn that The Force Awakens operated under a totally different name during production. Pablo Hidalgo, a Creative Exec at Lucasfilm, revealed the film's original title was "Shadow of the Empire." If that name sounds familiar to some fans, it's because the name very closely resembles Steve Perry's "Star Wars Legends" novel, Shadows of the Empire.

Star Wars: Episode VIII is set to cruise into theaters December 15th 2017.
