It looks like life is about to get harder for the Secret Warriors. When Agents of SHIELD returns tonight for Season 4, the team will find itself weighed down by all sorts of red tape. According to two executive producers, the new Director of SHIELD is about to make it very difficult for the warriors to assemble.

ComicBook.com's Ashley Robinson spoke with Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen at the recent premiere for Agents of SHIELD. The producers took time to talk about where the Secret Warriors are going this season, and unsurprisingly, things don't look great.

When asked whether the team would have a bigger role in the fourth season, Jed teased that new oversight might impact the super posse.

"Well, there's new management at SHIELD, so getting around those rules will be tricky," he said. "But some of those characters are a permanent part of our universe."

Maurissa also chimed in, saying that the events of Captain America: Civil War have changed the game for Earth's heroes. "In light of the Sokovia Accords and SHIELD being legitimized again, everything is going to be done with a closer eye and much more red tape," she explained. "So, whether or not our team can come together in the way they did last year..."

"They might have to find a way around that," Jed finished.

If you're unfamiliar with the Secret Warriors, then you should revisit the last season of Agents of SHIELD. The team fully assembled halfway through the third season when Daisy Johnson, Lincoln Campbell, Yo-Yo, and Joey Guitierrez joined forces. The small team represented a major milestone for the series as Agents of SHIELD has long championed its humanity.

However, plenty of fans were vocal about how unsatisfied they were with that approach. If Agents of SHIELD was meant to take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then viewers felt it was missing something - and that something was superheroes.

Of course, the upcoming season of Agents of SHIELD will help address those complaints. The show is bringing Ghost Rider into the fold courtesy of Robbie Reyes (Gabriel Luna). The hellish hero will likely come in conflict with Team Coulson and SHIELD as a whole, so maybe the Secret Warriors may be assembled to take on the fiery character?

For now, fans shouldn't be worried about the Secret Warriors fading into obscurity. It's unlikely that Agents of SHIELD would ignore the fan-favorite characters, especially since the two producers teased a big threat could be coming to the show.

In light of the Sokovia Accords, and with Hydra obliterated, SHIELD has been legitimatized again and no longer needs to operate in the shadows. Since the world presumes that Coulson is dead, the organization needed a new Director to be the face of the organization. Coulson finds himself back in the role as an agent and teamed with Mack, and together they are tasked with tracking down and confirming the presence of Enhanced people, aka Inhumans. Agent May is tasked with training specialist strike teams, and Fitz and Simmons have taken a big step forward in their relationship.

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD returns to ABC on September 20 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
