Doctor Strange: Benedict Cumberbatch On The Various Costumes He Wears

As you would expect, Stephen Strange goes through an assortment of costumes along his journey from being a rich, arrogant neurosurgeon to becoming the Sorcerer Supreme.

But before he become a powerful sorcerer, he must become a student of Tilda Swinton's Ancient One. And for that, Benedict Cumberbatch has to wear a very plain novice outfit.

"This is him. This is the first day at school kind of outfit," Cumberbatch told ComicBook.com during a set vist. "It seems to get cooler and it gets warmer, thank God, but it seems to get heavier and heavier."

The Sherlock star found the Cloak of Levitation, a cloak that allows the wearer to levitate, a bit of challenge to wear at times.

"The Cloak of Levitation, which is a dear friend sometimes in certain takes becomes the Cloak of Imitations," he quipped. "I either trip on it, or it's like, 'Oh, God, is my entire body moving like this?' What actor playing a superhero doesn't complain about the costume? It's a blast. It's a real blast. And Alex [Byrne], our costume designer, she's a f--king genius."

To be a part of a big-budget film like this one, with lots of talented artists working behind-the-scenes, was a huge selling point for Cumberbatch.

"I've never done a lead role in a film this big in a franchise this big, and one of the reasons was I wanted to know what the toy box was like," he shared. "It's just insane, the amount of facility that everyone gets, but the amount of artistry and craft that's brought to every aspect of filmmaking. You go to your first costume fitting, and it's one of 30. It's a myriad, but it's for a reason. I've got so many incredible costumes in this, and you go through a process."

The cast features Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, Star Into Darkness, The Imitation Game), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Rachel McAdams (Sherlock Holmes), Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man), Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) and Tilda Swinton (The Grand Budapest Hotel).

The film is directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister) and written by Derrickson, Jon Spaihts (Prometheus), and C. Robert Cargill (Sinister).

Marvel's Doctor Strange is produced by Kevin Feige with Louis D'Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Charles Newirth, Stephen Broussard and Stan Lee serving as executive producers.
