It's no secret that Marvel has yet to release a female-led superhero film since the release of Iron Man (2008) started the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, DC Films which just kicked off their own cinematic universe (DCEU) with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice this year, already has a Wonder Woman movie headed to the big screen.

Fans have been asking for a Black Widow solo movie for quite some time now, and recent news has given us some hope that Marvel Studios might finally make it happen. Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) has been such a breakout character in most of the MCU movies that she deserves a solo film too - front and center.

In a recent interview with Variety, Scarlett Johansson gave us an update on the possible Black Widow solo flick:

"I would like for it to happen under the right circumstances. I think there's a lot of opportunity to mine that story line. She's got a really rich origins story. There's a lot of places you can go — you can bring it back to Russia. You could explore the Widow program. There's all kinds of stuff that you could do with it. You could really uncover the identity of who this person is, where she comes from and where she's part of."

Of course! there is a lot of greatness in Black Widow's comic book history that fans would love to see adapted for the big screen, and somehow tied into the current MCU timeline.

Johansson went on to explain if the film would be a prequel or not:

"It's a possibility. There's plenty of back story. Or not. It could be something else. Where do the Avengers go? They are underground. What happens then? What happens after it all falls apart? There are so many ways you can go. I think it would just have to be very much like its own specific thing. It would have to have its own specific vibe. It would have been totally different than any of the other standalone films. I think if the fans wanted it enough, then it would probably become a reality."

Hey Scarlett, trust us - the fans want it enough, especially since Black Widow's backstory was cut from Captain America: Civil War.

She did reveal that she is in talks with Marvel about getting her own movie and how invested she is in the character:

"Yeah, of course. I talk to them about it often. It would have to fit in the idea of where they want to go. I'm invested in that character. Marvel is greatly invested in that character. If I did it, I'd have to do it while. I still actually wanted to wear a skin-tight catsuit. I don't know how much longer that's going to be."

While this isn't a confirmation per se, it's still good to hear that the idea of a Black Widow standalone movie is being tossed around at Marvel. Hopefully enough to actually make it happen considering it sounds like Johansson is in!

Don't forget we also have the female-directed Marvel movie Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson to look forward to as well!
