Marvel's Doctor Strange is about to hit theaters... in oversea markets. The film won't open in US theaters until early November, but UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Mexico, Australia, Korea and other countries will start seeing the debut of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Sorcerer Supreme this weekend (Oct. 28).
Deadline is reporting the early projections for Doctor Strange and they look fairly good. It may not turn out to be Marvel's biggest debut ever, but it will certainly be big enough to earn the title of the fall's biggest international movie debut... at least so far. There is still another little Disney movie (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), which will also be hitting theaters in December.
The early projections are that Doctor Strange will open in an estimated range of $55 - 70 million dollars; that puts it even with Ant-Man on the low end projections, and in the range of Guardians of the Galaxy on the high end. In our measurement, it wouldn't be surprising if Doctor Strange ended up landing somewhere in the middle. The lasting impression has been that fans are more open to the character ad his solo film than they were for Ant-Man, but at the same time, the hype and anticipation for Doctor Strange is definitely not as high as Guardians.
Still, with little competition from any other big tentpole films, Doctor Strange should do just fine, internationally and domestically; especially if early reviews about the must-see IMAX 3D visuals translate into strong word of mouth. It's been a minute since we've had a "must see" theatrical event; if anyone can create one, it's Marvel Studios.
