As you know, the season finale of Supergirl ended on a cliffhanger. A pod, similar to the Kryptonian spacecraft Kara arrived in many years ago, crash-landed on Earth, and when Supergirl and Martian Manhunter checked out the crash site, she approached the pod, opened its hatch, and gasped, "Oh, my god." The screen faded to black and left us all to guess who the mystery character was. In the following hours, days, weeks, and months, everyone made their best guess — with many guessing Cyborg Superman, Superboy, Alura Zor-El, Jeremiah Danvers, or The Eradicator. Of course, in the Season 2 premiere, it was quickly revealed that Mon-El was in pod.

Several days ago, while giving a tour of the DEO set, filmmaker Kevin Smith (Clerks) took some time to chat with Eric Carrasco — a new Supergirl writer that worked on this Monday's "Survivors" episode and Smith's upcoming "Supergirl Lives" episode — and had the young scribe explain how his knowledge of comic books, especially the DC universe, helped him land his enviable job.

"So I'm in the meeting [with Executive Producer] Andrew Kreisberg," he explained, "and I go, 'Who was in the pod at the end of Season 1?' And Andrew says, 'Who do you think is in the pod?' And this is the test and I know it's the test. So, he puts me on the spot. I rattle off a bunch of things. 'Can you use Green Lantern characters? Can you use Sodam Yat?' Can you use this? It could be a Legion thing.' And I finish with, 'Or just go the easy route and maybe it's Mon-El.' Yeah, I got there the first day and he goes, 'You get a gold star. That's why we hired you—was because of the piece of trivia. You figured out what we were going to do with the pod all along." The avid comic book reader added, "My wasted life was not a waste."

HANK AND M'GANN GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER; AN ALIEN FIGHT CLUB RUN BY ROULETTE GRABS SUPERGIRL'S ATTENTION — When Kara (Melissa Benoist) and Alex (Chyler Leigh) investigate the murder of an unregistered alien, the trail leads to an alien fight club run by Roulette (guest star Dichen Lachman), the ringmaster who commands aliens to fight in mortal combat for the entertainment of rich humans.

While trying to stop the fighting, Supergirl and Martian Manhunter find themselves up against a surprising opponent. Meanwhile, Hank (David Harewood) is thrilled to have found another Martian and tries to get to know M'Gann (guest star Sharon Leal) better. Supergirl takes Mon-El (Chris Wood) under her wing and begins to train him.

James Marshall directed the episode, written by Paula Yoo & Eric Carrasco.

Distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. International Television Distribution, SUPERGIRL is executive produced by Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash), Ali Adler (The New Normal), Andrew Kreisberg (The Flash, Arrow) and Sarah Schechter (Blindspot, The Mysteries of Laura). Supergirl is based on the characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and appearing in DC Comics, by special arrangement with the Jerry Siegel Family.

"Survivors" episode of Supergirl will air Monday, October 31 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
