Chewbacca's English Lines Revealed in New Star Wars Behind-the-Scenes Video

In Star Wars, there are some great mysteries: What exactly is the Force and how does it work? Was Anakin's fall to the dark side him failing the prophecy or fulfilling it? What the #*$& are Wookiees and droids saying?

Earlier this year, that last one got a little insight, when writer Charles Soule revealed that he writes dialogue, in English, for the diminutive ball droid BB-8 when he's writing scripts for his Poe Dameron comic book series at Marvel Comics. He even revealed a couple of lines that BB-8 utters, though not too much.

Now, thanks to a new tweeted out video from actor Peter Mayhew, who has portrayed the Wookiee Chewbacca since the first Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, we have a little more insight. Apparently, while on set of the original trilogy, Chewbacca's lines were recited in English, probably to help the other actors as much as it was to help Mayhew in his performance.

The video comes from film documentary maker Jamie Benning, who has done "Filmumentaries" like "Star Wars Begins," "Raiding the Lost Ark," and more.

"Where the hell have you been?" Chewbacca shouts from atop the Millennium Falcon in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back. "Where you going? What time are we leaving then?" Chewie continues in a bit of back-and-forth with Han Solo (Harrison Ford).

Being so used to Chewbacca's usual Wookiee roars and trills, it can almost be off-putting; it feels more like a parody than anything behind-the-scenes. It's similar to seeing Mayhew in the costume with the headpiece/mask off; it just doesn't feel quite right. Of course, it also happens to be pretty darn funny. It'd be interesting to see the scripts or simply watch the recordings of Mayhew in action.

Most recently, Mayhew, who has battled knee problems for years, shared Chewbacca duties in Star Wars: The Force Awakens with another actor. The same situation is likely for Star Wars: Episode VIII, which is currently in post-production for a December 15, 2017 release. Mayhew also appeared in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: The Clone Wars as Chewbacca, so his continued involvement with the character is always welcomed by fans.

For now, while fans wait for his next appearance in Episode VIII, and the character's appearance in Han Solo: A Star Wars Story, they can rewatch the original trilogy and try to figure out the rest of his lines, using "Where the hell have you been?" as a reference.
