Update: According to Anime News Network, Viz Media announced that Hamric "misspoke or was misquoted about a new Tokyo Ghoul season. The anime receiving another season is My Hero Academia. The original article is below."

Tokyo Ghoul fans get ready for some of the good news. The long wait may be finally over, a new season of the beloved dark anime may be coming soon. According to Kevin Hamric, senior director of sales and marketing at Viz Media, it is on the way.

In an interview recently Hamric was asked about what new shows are coming soon, he responded with the following:

"Nothing that's been recently released, but One-Punch Man is coming back on with season two. There's going to be another season of Tokyo Ghoul coming shortly. Later in the year, those would be the bigger releases on the anime side."

This is big news, but before fans get too excited it is important to note that season three has not been announced officially in Japan.

However this is not the first time a release for the third season of the anime has been teased. Back in 2015, Funimation stated that a third season of Tokyo Ghoul was set for 2016, but no more was said about the subject. But all fans got from the team was a new mobile game, with no 2016 anime to be seen.

If you are not familiar with Tokyo Ghoul, then you can catch up on what you need to known about the series below. It is set in an alternate reality where terrifying creatures known as ghouls exist. These creepy monsters survive by consuming human flesh (like zombies) and live secretly amongst humans in the city. The story follows a boy named Ken Kaneki after an encounter with a girl leaves him a half-ghoul. Ken struggles with adapting to his new life, and tries his best to fit into ghoul society, keep evil secret hidden from humans, and calm down the insatiable hunger he has for flesh everyday

Tokyo Goul is a highly popular dark fantasy series by Sui Ishida. The original manga was serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump that ran from 2011 to 2015, and is currently serializing the sequel to the original series, Tokyo Ghoul:re. The manga has two anime series, several movie projects, and games as well. There is a live action Tokyo Ghoul movie set to release in summer of 2017.

Viz Media just recently got the license for the new sequel manga of the Tokyo Ghoul:re series. The manga is set to release this fall.
