Marvel's Kevin Feige made a comment during a press event this week that corroborates earlier reports that Sony is developing Spider-Man spinoff movies separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- but doesn't make the idea sound as dire as some would have you believe.
In clarifying his studio's relationship to Spider-Man, Feige confirmed that Marvel will be involved with the next Spider-Man stand-alone movie after Homecoming, and that Avengers 4 would feature an appearance by Spider-Man.
Then, in a statement that's already being dissected around the internet, Feige said that was it -- for now. At present, Marvel isn't involved with any of the Spider-Man spinoffs, but presumably that doesn't mean they couldn't be down the road.
"We had a very particular plan about Spidey himself," Feige said, implying that those plans did not necessitate or include other high-profile names who are tied to the Spider-Man property.
The fact that Sony is so aggressively developing properties like Venom and Silver Sable, as well as a non-Marvel Universe Spider-Man animated movie, likely suggests some hedging of their bets to see how open audiences are to yet another new Sony take on the wall crawler.
Prior to Tom Holland's first appearance in Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man was the lead character in three movies by Sam Raimi, all of which starred Tobey Maguire in the title role, and then a pair of movies starring Andrew Garfield.
The Garfield movies were originally planned as a trilogy, with tie-ins like Venom and Sinister Six planned, but when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was met with box office indifference and fan backlash, that fledgling Spider-Universe was scrapped in favor of a plan that involved working with Marvel to recast and redeem the character in live action.
