If you are unfamiliar with the story of Ajin: Demi-Human, it follows a normal high school student named Kei Nagai, who randomly discovers that he is an immortal,"Ajin", when he is hit by a truck and doesn't die. He then becomes a wanted criminal because in the time and place the show takes place, Ajin are considered dangerous inhuman mutants. The only person who comes to his help is childhood friend, Kaito. The government claims to be helping the Ajin, providing them with a safe environment to live. The manga behind the franchise was first created by Gamon Sakurai in 2012, and appeared in Kondansha's good! Afternoon Magazine. A 3D CG anime film trilogy was inspired by the original manga as well as two television anime seasons, and three original anime DVDs by Polygon Pictures. Most recently, the first season of the new television anime premiered and streamed exclusively on Netflix.

The live-action film is directed by Katsuhiro Motohira, and the team behind the live-action Rurouni Kenshin films were behind the scenes. The film has set an official release date for September 30, 2017.
