The Kickstarter campaign for a Veronica Mars movie ended at 11 p.m. EST today, eventually generating $5.7 million and earning the support of 91,585 backers. That number bests the previous record for most-ever Kickstarter backers by more than 4,000--a goal that director Rob Thomas and star Kristen Bell had set out to break shortly after the campaign surpassed $5 million, more than twice the "official" goal but reportedly the number that Thomas had his heart set on for the campaign. This means that by the time the film's Kickstarter campaign wrapped less than an hour ago, it had broken a number of records. There are likely more, but at a minimum, the filmmaker boasted of having been informed by Kickstarter that they were the fastest campaign ever to reach $1 million, and then $2 million as well; the highest-funded film/video project in Kickstarter history, the project with the most backers in the site's history and the third-highest-funded campaign in Kickstarter history. The top two campaigns ever? One was a watch with multiple, customizable faces that would also allow the user to get notifications from their smartphone, and the other was a gaming console. Both of those went into the campaigns asking for around $1 million, half of what Mars was asking, but also required many times the amount of the average Veronica Mars transaction in order to enjoy the fruits of the campaign. The movie will head to Comic Con in July, and hopefully ComicBook.com will be able to bring you some news from their panel and offsite event; in the meantime, expect few updates between now and when filming begins in June or early July.
