IDW Publishing is launching on ongoing comics series based on the world of "V-Wars," a prose anthology of vampire fiction edited by best-selling author Jonathan Maberry. The world of V-Wars was changed by a global pandemic that spread vampirism throughout the world. The virus effects each victim differently, creating different cultures and types of vampires across the globe. "The vampires people used to believe in weren't charming romantic antiheroes. They were monsters," says writer Maberry. "Each culture had their own legends, and each of these vampires was completely different from the others; and all of them were different from the vampires in pop-culture. We went directly to the source: the myths and legends of vampires around the world and throughout history. Old-school, scary, and complicated." The series will debut on Free Comic Book Day - May 3, 2014 – with a free issue #0 featuring a cover by Kevin Eastman, creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The issue will show readers the early days of the outbreak through the eyes of a folklore scholar, Luther Swann. V-Wars #1 will be released the same day, at standard cover price, and will spotlight one of the events that escalates the Vampire Wars. Maberry will write the series, with art from Alan Robinson (Mars Attacks, Kiss: Solo) and colors from Jay Fotos (Locke & Key).
