X-Men and Spider-Man

Earlier today, we reported that a teaser clip for X-Men: Days of Future Past was included at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which opened today in the United Kingdom. This was quite a surprising development since the films are made by two different studios: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is from Sony Pictures, while X-Men: Days of Future Past is from Twentieth Century Fox. The reason for the teaser has now been revealed. According to Variety, the inclusion has to do with director Marc Webb's contract negotiations. It turns out that Webb, who directed 500 (Days) of Summer, was still under contract to direct another film for Fox. This second Fox film may have conflicted with Webb being able to return to direct The Amazing Spider-Man 2. After some negotiations, Fox agreed to let Webb out of his contract, but only if Sony agreed to plug Fox's new X-Men film free of charge. The teaser following Amazing Spider-Man 2, presumably, fulfills that promise, with the added bonus of generating some extra buzz for Amazing Spider-Man 2. To be clear, this DOES NOT mean that the X-Men and Spider-Man film universes will be crossing over, at least not outside of this little bit of cross-promotion. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 comes to theaters in North America on May 2. X-Men: Days of Future Past opens May 23.
