In an interview with The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith podcast, Simon Kinberg confirmed that Ridley Scott would be filming The Martian, starring Matt Damon, this fall (via IndieWire).

Kinberg is producing the film. He originally intended it to be helmed by Drew Goddard, who wrote the script, before Goddard became entangled in the Amazing Spider-Man franchise.

Ridley Scott stepped in as director following Goddard's departure from the project. If the film is to begin shooting this fall, it brings up some scheduling questions about Prometheus 2, making it seem more and more likely that Scott will not be directing the sequel.

The Martian is based on the novel of the same name by Andy Weir, which was self-published electronically in 2011 and in print in 2012. The novel follows an American astronaut who becomes stranded, alone, on the surface of Mars.
