Fan-Made Justice League Poster Homages Film Classic

Sentry Designs has posted a custom Justice League poster on Twitter that pays homage to Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 classic Seven Samurai.

The black-and-white fan work depicts Superman (Henry Cavill), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), Flash (Ezra Miller), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), and Batman (Ben Affleck) united as the Justice League, mirroring an official Seven Samurai movie poster.

Shortly before shooting commenced on Justice League in April 2016, director Zack Snyder compared the superhero epic to Kurosawa’s iconic work, which has inspired everything from A Bug’s Life to Mad Max: Fury Road. “It’s an intense and awesome and gigantic undertaking,” Snyder said. “Bruce is having to go out and sort of Seven Samurai the Justice League together, which is fun, but slightly monumental. And at the same time they’re starting to grapple with this coming threat.”

Fans following the development of Justice League will remember Snyder dropped audience’s first look at the DC Cinematic Universe’s take on Aquaman in February 2015, posting an image of Momoa in costume overlaid with the text, “Unite the Seven.” As more on Justice League came to light, we learned the team would eventually be Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, Cyborg, and a resurrected Superman — and nothing more was ever said about a seventh member, who may have been dropped around the same time the superhero team-up went from “Justice League Part One” to Justice League. (“Unite the Seven” became simply “Unite the League.”)

Justice League opens in theaters on November 17, 2017.

Justice League is directed by Zack Snyder, from a screenplay by Chris Terrio, based on a story by Snyder and Terrio, Justice League stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher, Ciarán Hinds, Amy Adams, Willem Dafoe, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, and J. K. Simmons.
