With the PlayStation 4 still holding strong in unit sales and Microsoft just releasing its Xbox One X console, one has to believe that this console generation will be holding on for some time. However, Ubisoft believes it's got a more specific window, with the next Xbox and PlayStation 5 coming sooner rather than later.

On the company's recent fiscal call, in which it reported remarkable sales numbers, the company noted that it we've got at least two years left in this current console generation, before the shift is made to newer hardware.

Granted, that doesn't mean the current systems are going anywhere, since a lot of people are just picking up on PS4 and Xbox One. But, eventually, the company believes a shift will be made, just as it was with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

It noted that it didn't have any new information as far as the new consoles were concerned, instead referring those folks to Microsoft or Sony for potential answers. And, as you might guess, neither party is ready to talk about new hardware yet, outside of the Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro.

Ubisoft did note, however, that it was pleased that the two big console makers decided to refresh their current consoles with hardware upgrades, instead of releasing secondary items to enhance gameplay, such as the Xbox Kinect and the PlayStation Move controller. This allows the team to have a better developmental advantage when it comes to making the best games, as you can see from enhancements with games like Assassin's Creed Origins. That's not to say there aren't games that don't take advantage of said devices – just look at the line of Just Dance games.

That said, the next console generation could come sooner rather than later, and some are already placing bets on what the new machines will do. In fact, on a recent episode of The Pachter Factor, analyst Michael Pachter noted that the next machines to come down the line will cost less than $500 – kind of like the Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro kind of do now.

We'll see what happens over the next few years.
