LoL, of course he originally was supposed to be THE Groot. Gunn has been pretty transparent in his moves to squeeze every last bit from the "Groot" character, specifically The baby version. When a year later he clarified that the original Groot was dead it was clearly to get the character to trend again, since for a couple decades the character has repeatedly been blown to bits and regrown with a twig.
