The 74th annual Golden Globes will air Sunday, January 8 at 8pm Eastern time, and the nerd community will be glued to the telecast for the first time ever.
Why? Because one of our own has been nominated - for multiple awards - at one of the industry's most prestigious award ceremonies. The Golden Globes are right up there with the Academy and Emmy awards, and Deadpool has been nominated for two of the night's biggest awards.
While the awards shows normally celebrate a different style of film, the R-rated Deadpool has been nominated for Best Movie - Musical or Comedy, while Ryan Reynolds has been nominated for Best Actor In a Musical Or Comedy for his take on the titular character.
What are the chances that Deadpool can take home either award?
When looking for the film to win the Best Musical or Comedy, the chances are probably pretty slim. The movie itself is wonderful, and it's beloved by audiences and critics alike, but there has been a solid favorite in that category for quite awhile now. La La Land, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, looks to be a lock for that award.
As far as the acting award for Reynolds is concerned, his chances are much higher.
Reynolds will go head-to-head with Gosling (La La Land), Jonah Hill (War Dogs), Hugh Grant (Florence Foster Jenkins), and Colin Farrell (The Lobster).
Deadpool's critical acclaim, along with Reynolds' perfect portrayal of the character, probably push him past Grant and Hill. Their performances were incredible, but Reynolds has a leg up.
The real competition here comes in the form of Gosling and Farrell. Both actors were highly praised for their turns in their respective movies - and Gosling has the added bonus of La La Land being nominated for several other awards.
While this competition if fierce, Ryan Reynolds definitely holds his own. Those three actors probably each have an equal chance of winning.
Deadpool's chances of winning an award at the Golden Globes are pretty high, at least in the acting category.
