In what certainly sounds like a condemnation of Marvel Television's latest project, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn dismissed a fan request to "save" Marvel's The Inhumans during a Q&A on Facebook this afternoon.
The filmmaker was seemingly bemused by the question, giving a short answer and quickly moving on to the next question.
"It does not look like there is much saving left for the Inhumans," Gunn joked.
While it sounds like he is taking a shot at the critically-reviled TV series (Marvel's The Inhumans currently sits at 7% on Rotten Tomatoes), it is possible that Gunn is referring to the fact that he works for Marvel Studios' feature film unit, while The Inhumans are on television and thus out of his "reach."
"Well, as you know Marvel is one big giant company, and this was a property that was in [the] movie division, and when they looked at their schedule and realized what they wanted to be doing, [Inhumans] was something that was gonna push very far out," Marvel TV chief Jeph Loeb said recently. "So we started having a conversation with them about, 'well, maybe this is something that would work as a television series.' And that worked out really well."
So whether or not Gunn likes the TV version of The Inhumans (and, admittedly, it sounds here like he does not), it is unlikely he could "save" much of anything when it is outside of his wheelhouse.
The first two episodes of Inhumans were released earlier this month in IMAX theaters ahead of the series' television debut on ABC Friday, September 29.
Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 is currently available on DVD, Blu-ray, UHD Blu-ray, and streaming.
