While many were introduced to the Kingsman franchise in when the first movie was released in 2014, it existed a couple of years before that. The Secret Service was a comic written from Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, and it inspired the events of the first film.
The series only ran for six issues, so there was only about one movie's worth of story within the pages. A sequel was immediately given the green light, and it would move forward with a brand new story that wasn't told in the comics.
The Golden Circle won't be the only new story told in the Kingsman series though, as there is also a new set of comics set to release this year.
Following the release of the first Golden Circle trailer last night, Mark Millar announced that another Kingsman comic would be coming in September. He didn't offer much detail on the project, other than the fact that it's called Kingsman: The Red Diamond.
Judging by the change in names, it's likely that the comic and movie storylines will be separate. However, there's always the chance that the comic could serve as some kind of tie to the film, coinciding with its release.
This would probably be a good time to mention that a new Kingsman comic starts in September too. Kingsman: The Red Diamond. More later :)— Mark Millar (@mrmarkmillar) April 25, 2017
Kingsman: The Secret Service introduced the world to Kingsman - an independent, international intelligence agency operating at the highest level of discretion, whose ultimate goal is to keep the world safe. In Kingsman: The Golden Circle, our heroes face a new challenge. When their headquarters are destroyed and the world is held hostage, their journey leads them to the discovery of an allied spy organization in the US called Statesman, dating back to the day they were both founded. In a new adventure that tests their agents' strength and wits to the limit, these two elite secret organizations band together to defeat a ruthless common enemy, in order to save the world, something that's becoming a bit of a habit for Eggsy...
The film is being directed by Matthew Vaughn. The script was co-written by Vaughn and Jane Goldman, based on the “The Secret Service” comic book created by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons. It is produced by Vaughn, David Reid, and Adam Bohling.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle arrives in theaters on September 29, 2017.
