'Pacific Rim Uprising' Director Thinks Crossover With Godzilla/Kong Could be "Cool"

A cinematic 'MonsterVerse' is on the way from Legendary Entertainment - and the director of Pacific Rim Uprising wouldn't mind joining in on the fun.
Steven DeKnight, who is helming the much-anticipated sequel, was recently asked about a possible crossover between the two franchises. DeKnight seemed to endorse the idea, tweeting "How cool would that be?"

With the Pacific Rim franchise - which began with Guillermo del Toro's cult classic 2013 film - also under the Legendary umbrella, a potential crossover certainly isn't out of the question.
Some purists might argue that Pacific Rim would distract from the more classic MonsterVerse creatures, such as Godzilla, King Kong, and Mothra. But with Godzilla already establishing different types of kaiju - the monsters Pacific Rim's jaegars usually fight - it'd be pretty awesome to see them lend their help to the MonsterVerse as well.
While the 2018 release of Pacific Rim Uprising is still a ways away, fans have already gotten pretty hyped for the film. A first trailer for Uprising was unveiled at New York Comic Con, and has been well-received by fans in the days since.
The film takes place ten years after the Battle of the Breach in the original Pacific Rim. The Kaiju threat has subsided, but the Pan Pacific Defense Corp's Jaeger program is more robust than ever and continues to await the Kaiju's return.
John Boyega plays Jake Pentecost, the son of Stacker Pentecost, the high-ranking PPDC officer who was played by Idris Elba in the first film. Stacker was the commanding officer of Raleigh Beckett and adoptive father of Mako Mori. Jake will pilot the Jaeger called Gypsy Avenger, the namesake of Raleigh's Jaeger Gypsy Danger.
Rinko Kikuchi will reprise her role as Mako. Charlie Day and Burn Gorman will also return for the sequel. New cast members include Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Adria Arjona, and Jing Tian.
Pacific Rim: Uprising opens in theaters on March 23, 2018.
