Friday night, during the Q&A portion of J.J. Abrams and Chris Rock's Tribeca Film Festival panel, a Star Wars fan asked the Episode VII director, "Who are Rey's parents?" His answer caught most everyone by surprise.

"Rey's parents are not in Episode VII," he revealed to the attentive audience. "So I can't possibly say in this moment who they are. But I will say it is something that Rey thinks about, too."

It didn't take long for that bombshell to spread, and when it did, people were stunned. Suddenly, many theories regarding Rey's parentage went out the window.

After the panel, Abrams clarified his comments. "What I meant was that she doesn't discover them in Episode VII," Abrams told Entertainment Weekly. "Not that they may not already be in her world"

Rey took her first steps into a larger world in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and will continue her epic journey with Finn, Poe, and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the continuing Star Wars saga, Star Wars: Episode VIII.

Star Wars: Episode VIII, which is written and directed by Rian Johnson and continues the storylines introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, welcomes back cast members Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis. New cast members will include Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, Academy Award nominee Laura Dern, and talented newcomer Kelly Marie Tran.

Star Wars: Episode VIII is scheduled for release December 15, 2017.
